Sometimes it pays to complain.

Two years ago, we’d purchased a Canon PowerShot Camera. But caring for Mom left us with little time for picture taking and the poor thing sat on a shelf, in its case waiting.

Fast forward to the end of 2013. After Mom passed away we found ourselves walking. A lot. And that’s when we remembered the PowerShot. What an impressive little picture-taker it turned out to be.

I think the three of us had maybe a dozen walks and three weeks together before it shot its little belly half out and FSSSSSZZZT —choked to death.

Just over two years old with maybe three hundred shots in grand total and the little freaker was tits up and well out of warranty. The camera wasn’t the only thing choked at that point!

What follows is a snapshot of actions:

  1. Phone the Canon repair service for advice, find out it will cost $99. before they will even look at it, and that’s after you wrap it up, pay $10-$12.00 for postage to ship it to one of their repair depots.
  2. Try not to slam the phone down since there’s no point in having more broken items.
  3. Look online for suggestions and try fixing the problem at home.
  4. When that doesn’t work, pack up the camera and a polite but firm letter stating your disappointment over their barely used product and tell them that if they are going to sell substandard products you want them the satisfaction of burying it since it’s of no use to you.
  5. Mail package to Company Headquarters and feel a momentary surge of self-empowerment—at least until you begin to notice all the wonderful things worth taking a picture of now that you don’t have a camera. Grrrrrrrr 
  6. Begin giving gun-shy glances at other brands of cameras.
  7.  Try not to fall off your chair when Canon Headquarters calls you and apologizes. APOLOGIZES! And because they feel bad, offer you the next model up for a-next-to-nothing cost and that’s including all shipping and taxes.

Kudos to Canon for taking care of a customer.
